Sports
Sports are a form of recreation, a way, literally of creating
ourselves. They should enable us to relax and enjoy ourselves, to
find new meanings in life, to get a different perspective on our
jobs, our families, and the things we think are important. They
should encourage us to participate and keep our own bodies (``A
temple in which resides the soul'') healthy, lean, and firm. But
when winning becomes the important thing, these purposes are
lost.
Gus Turbeville; On Being Good Sports
There is a story about the first time Babe Ruth faced Walter
Johnson, one of the greatest pitchers in baseball. The first two
pitches were fast balls that zipped across the plate for called
strikes. The next pitch was another fast ball and the umpire
called Babe out. As Ruth was walking away from the plate he asked
the umpire, ``Did you see any of those pitches?'' ``Nope,'' said
the umpire truthfully. ``Neither did I,'' confessed Ruth, ``but
that last one sounded kind of high to me.''
