Patriotism and Citizenship

Returning from a European trip in 1938, Irving Berlin was asked by Kate Smith, the radio song bird, for a new patriotic song to voice Americans' growing awareness of the grandeur and glory of their land. Berlin's own recent experience in hate-torn Europe, and his delight in being back in a free America made him eager to express his own intense love and pride in his country.
Kate Smith introduced the song over the radio, and before long, ``God Bless America'' became as well known to most Americans as their anthem.
David Ewen; The Story of Irving Berlin; Henry Holt & Co.

At no time in our history has it been so important to be good Americans first and good doctors or bankers or bakers second.
Alfred Ellison; Journal of the Indiana State Medical Association

Stabilize America first, prosper America first, think of America first.
Warren G. Harding; 29th U.S. President
