Where did you get that pretty red hair?'' a small girl was asked. ``I think I got it from Daddy,''she replied. ``Mommy still has hers.''

Many young people are beginning to feel that the family doesn't meet their needs and that the historical conditions that gave rise to it no longer exist. The family, according to the classical definition, is a unit which fulfills reproductive, social, economic, emotional and sexual needs. But in an overpopulated world that no longer needs maximum reproduction of the species, where fewer and fewer people are needed to produce more and more goods, and where more and more men and women are breaking out of the family structure for satisfaction of their sexual and emotional needs, the old rationale becomes increasingly hard to justify. And so the ``breakdown of the nuclear family'' has become a media today.

Some children in the U.S. have forgotten how to be children. They grow up too quickly, and sophistication freezes those reserves of wonder which, if they remain fluid at their source, can nourish us for the rest of our lives...Of course, if we tried to remain Tom Sawyers, we would soon find that the awkwardly situated windmills of real life give us a thorough drubbing. But we do need to have been Tom Sawyers.
